Stockport kicks off SwimBritain 2014
Olympic Silver Medalist and Double World Champion Kerri-Anne Payne and 50m breaststroke World Record holder Adam Peaty joined hundreds of swimmers from across the North West as they took part in British Gas SwimBritain Stockport at Life Leisure Grand Central Pools on Saturday 30th August.
The event marked the launch of an action-packed month of British Gas SwimBritain events. Now in its second year, British Gas SwimBritain encourages more people to swim regularly and sees the decorated stars of British Swimming plus celebrities including David Walliams joining the public in the water at 11 locations nationwide between 30th August and 4th October.
Participants compete as teams of four to complete relay challenges of 500m and 1,000m before receiving their hard-earned medals, with some swimmers using the event to raise funds for charity.
It was an emotional return to Stockport for Keri-Anne Payne, who said: “It was particularly special for me to swim with the public in Stockport as I used to train in this pool as a junior!
“British Gas SwimBritain is a great event as it encourages more people into the pool, which is something I’m very passionate about. I hope SwimBritain will inspire some future champions, so make sure you register for the upcoming SwimBritain events which take place in the next month.”
Fresh from winning four Gold Medals at the recent 2014 European Swimming Championships in Berlin, Adam Peaty said: “Swimming is such a fun sport and I’m excited take part in British Gas SwimBritain in Stockport.
“It has been a great month for me with two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games and breaking the World Record in Berlin.
“I hope young people across the country will be motivated to take up swimming as it’s a healthy and rewarding hobby.”
British Gas SwimBritain ambassador, Duncan Goodhew said, “It’s great to be a part of SwimBritain for a second year. The fantastic achievements of British swimmers have seen the popularity of swimming rise and I’m excited to be a part of this.
“British Gas SwimBritain is designed to inspire everyone to take the plunge and become more involved in swimming.
